Campus Grow - Volunteering Opportunities

Campus Grow is preparing it's gardens so students and community members can garden this summer!

Below there is a list of gardening activities that will be happening at Campus Grow's gardens and volunteers are much needed:

- Thursday (03/29) - Big Garden general maintenance: Putting weed cloth, newspaper and mulch to cover the soil and paths in between plots. Laying out the main path with rocks.

- Thursday (04/05) - Plot numbering and naming: Help number and name the plots of our plot renters this summer.

- Thursday (04/12) - Herb and Flower gardens: Weed and clean up herb and flower gardens, put newspaper and mulch.

- Thursday (04/19) - Donation Spiral: Weed and clean-up of the donation spiral. Putting up newspaper and mulch on the paths.

- Thursday (04/26) - Children's garden (small garden): Put up main paths and mulch on the Children's garden located in our small garden close to campus.

Every Thursday we will meet at 5:30 in Brooks 203, and then carpool to the garden. Volunteers will be taken back to campus at 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm.

Two Registered Student Organizations, Students Advocating Gender Equality and the Organization of Women Leaders have partnered with the Women’s Studies and Political Science departments to host an event on Monday,March 19th to bring awareness to the struggles that women have gaining influence in political situations. The event will consist of the showing of the documentary, as seen on the Oprah Winfrey Network, “Miss Representation” followed by a brief reception, with refreshments provided, and a bipartisan discussion panel with of past and present female politicians “The film exposes how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself”. The film includes interviews with many influential women such as: Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem. The panelists will then be invited to share their insight and personal experiences pertaining to the struggles they have faced in their political careers. This event will be held Monday, March 19th in Anspach 161 at 6pm.

The Vagina Monologues

In 1994, The Vagina Monologues, written by playwright and activist Eve Ensler, broke ground, offering to the world a piece of art like nothing it had seen before. Based on dozens of interviews Ensler conducted with women, the play addressed women's sexuality and the social stigma surrounding rape and abuse, creating a new conversation about, and with, women.

V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations.

This year Central Michigan University is bringing this production to Plachta Auditorium, to raise money for Women and Girls of Haiti, SAPA, and VOX's 2nd annual Sextival, which raises money for Women's Aid of Mt. Pleasant.

Tickets are sold at the door or via cast member or the week of the performance in the UC down under-->March 19-23 from 11am-3pm and Wednesday late (March 21) from 6-8 pm.

(Cash and checks only please!), $5.00 for students and $8.00 for Community. Donations are also accepted. Checks can be written out to VOX or to Elizabeth Aldrich.

What is Relay?
Relay For Life brings together more than 3.5 million people to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and empower individuals and communities to fight back against this disease. Relay brings people together from all walks of life to raise much needed funds and awareness. No matter who you are, there’s place for you at Relay. Join us at any one of the 5,000 community gatherings where teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns circling a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the overnight event.

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

• Celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer. The strength of survivors inspires others to continue their fight.
• Remember loved ones lost to the disease. At Relay, people who have walked along- side others battling cancer can grieve and find healing.
• Fight Back. We Relay because we have been touched by cancer and desperately want to put an end to the disease. Make a commitment to save lives by taking up the fight.

Duathalon

The third annual Out For Blood Duathlon and 5k is coming up this year on April 21, 2011 at 9am.

The Out For Blood Duathlon has been a very successful race in the past two years as a fundraiser for the American Red Cross. In the past two years, we have donated over $2,200 and hope to increase our donation even more this year!

Four different options of races are offered in this one race. There is a duathlon with two separate divisions (mountain bike and road bike). The duathlon involves a 5k run followed by a 20k bike. There is also a separately timed 5k only for those only interested in running. New to this year is a kids mile fun run free to children 14 and under!
