Hello Volunteers!
The Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center is putting on their annual Be My Neighbor Day event!
Be My Neighbor Day (BMND) was created as a day of service in the Mt Pleasant area, and is one of CMU's great traditions. Volunteering sites have been set-up all over the city and are ready to be filled! (Sites listed below)
Registration for sites is open on the Brandell Volunteer Center "Events" page of OrgSync. Volunteers must register for a volunteering site on OrgSync before the event. Descriptions of each site are available on OrgSync. Click here to register on OrgSync.
This year, BMND is on the morning of Saturday, April 21st.
Volunteers will sign-in near the Starbucks in the UC between 9am-10am.
There will be Free Food that morning, along with Free T-Shirts to be passed out at Sign-in.
Volunteers will carpool to service sites to work from 10am-12:30pm.

04-10-2012: THE WELCOME
Please join us at the UC Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 for the CMU campus premier of The Welcome documentary. Tickets are $1.00 for students and $5.00 for staff/faculty and community guests. All proceeds fund the CMU chapter of Student Veterans of America. The Welcome offers a fiercely intimate view of life after war: the fear, anger and isolation of post-traumatic stress that affects veterans and family members alike. As we join these vets in a small room for an unusual five day healing retreat, we witness how the ruins of war can be transformed into the beauty of poetry. Here our perceptions are changed, our psyches strained, and our hearts broken. And at the end, when this poetry is shared with a large civilian audience, we begin to understand that all of us are a vital piece of the Welcome as Veterans try to find the way back home. Their examples of unflinching honesty, courage and love lift us up, inspiring all of us once again to feel our common humanity, always the first casualty of war. It's time to get Fired Up for Homecoming 2012!! Homecoming is an exciting time of the year for CMU and your RSO can become involved by nominating a deserving student for CMU Homecoming Ambassador. All candidates must be nominated by a registered student organization. Each registered student organization or Student Life program is able to nominate one male & one female candidate. The deadline to submit the homecoming ambassador application is Friday April 6, 2012.
New this year, any RSO that nominates a person(s) for Homecoming Ambassador will receive 25 points that will go toward their Golden Goblet or Maroon Cup point total. 03-16-2012: A Message from Invisible Children @ CMU
Hello everyone,
My name is Caitlin Cheevers, and I am the president of the Invisible Children RSO on campus. There was been an increase in awareness of Invisible Children thanks to the video Kony 2012 that has been floating around the internet. Because of this, many students, especially on CMU's campus, want to get involved with the organization, namely Cover the Night.
For those of you who haven't seen the video, it can be viewed at www.Kony2012.com. Cover the Night is an event being planned to bring awareness to the campaign and Joseph Kony through street art. Thousands of people will hang posters all over various cities and campuses to bring awarenss to a 26-year-long war where Kony and his army, the Lord's Resistance Army, abduct children and force them to fight in a war older than they are.
We would love to have other RSOs collaborate with us to put on this event. We are very aware we cannot access every student on CMU's campus, and not many students know we already have a group. I would like to extend this invitation to anyone interested in collaborating to put on the event, because we would like to reach to the community outside CMU and Mount Pleasant, but we need a large body of people to be able to do so. Please don't hesitate to contact me via phone, email, Facebook, Twitter, carrier pigeon, etc. We are currently collaborating with Greek Force, but we would like to branch out even more to others on campus.
I am also aware there is plenty of controversy surrounding Invisible Children and Kony 2012. First of all, I would like to make it known that this campaign is not about Invisible Children. It is not about CMU. It is about stopping Joseph Kony and ending the use of child soldiers. If anyone has any questions or concerns about the nonprofit, our group, the campaign, etc., please let me know.

03-13-2012: Grand Central Magazine to host on-campus 5k for people and their pets
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich., March 13, 2012 – Grand Central Magazine, CMU’s student-run online magazine is partnering with HATS (Humane Animal Treatment Society) of Isabella County in hosting its first ever on campus 5K for people and their pets.
Grand Central Magazine presents “Un[leash] Your Step, a 5k fun run/walk through CMU’s campus to benefit animals in the shelter. Participants may walk with or without a pet.
Registration begins at 12:00 p.m. outside CMU’s Bovee University Center on Saturday April 28. Student volunteers will be on route helping to register participants, and provide refreshments for walkers and pets. Animals from the HATS shelter will also be in attendance.

Hello CMU Volunteer Leaders,
We are in need of volunteers for the 2012 Home Show, Style and Leisure which will be held the weekend of March 9. Volunteers are needed to help man the Habitat ReStore booth. The booth number is 11. Volunteers can just show up for their scheduled time and go directly to our booth (11). Time slots available are Saturday, March 10, 1:00 – 4:00 pm and 4:00 – 7: 00 pm and Sunday March 11, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. We need one volunteer in each time slot.
A staff or board member will be there to help answer questions. Volunteers do not need to bring anything.
The home show will be at the Indoor Athletic Conference in the track bay located on E. Campus Dr. Interested volunteers can contact me at the number below. Volunteers must contact me so I can add them to the schedule prior to the event. We, unfortunately cannot take walk up volunteers because the booth size limits the number of people.

Join Multicultural Academic Student Services for our Black History Month keynote speaker, Dick Gregory. Mr. Gregory will be speaking on Tuesday, February 21 at 7 pm in Plachta Auditorium. Human rights activist and civil rights speaker Dick Gregory continues protesting for the greater good, including conducting fasts and protests for fishermen's rights, ending hunger, and ending the drug problems in the United States. Highlights:
- Three credit course, HSC 516, offered to graduate students and undergraduate students with Sophomore, Junior or Senior status, or by permission of Instructor.
- Faculty-led trip.
- Nine days in Austria and Poland, and a short excursion into the Czech Republic.
- Scheduled presentations by resident experts: Austrian and Polish healthcare systems and European Union harmonization; Funding of the system through insurance products; The physician’s perspective; The patients’ perspective; Tour of Vienna and Krakow general hospitals; Tour of bustling physician clinics; Tour of teaching hospitals and a “best practices” discussion; and healthcare as big business.
- Learn how to compare and contrast various healthcare systems of the world, including especially the Austrian, Polish and the U.S. healthcare systems.

Good morning,
Attached is a flyer announcing a foundational meeting for Rotaract, a new student group which is an extension of the Mt Pleasant Rotary Club. The late Mary Ellen Brandell, as an active Rotarian, saw Rotaract as an outlet for service oriented youth to participate in community building projects. I am pleased to be involved in realizing part of her philanthropic vision. I'm asking that you share this flyer with any student who might embrace joining a group of enthusiastic entrepreneurs, united in helping the less fortunate. This is an organization they can continue with after graduation, since most American and larger international cities, have Rotary chapters and, by extension, Rotaract clubs. Both groups, wherever found, epitomize community service and international outreach. I sincerely appreciate your help in referring the industrious, the caring, the interested, and the curious to attend and get involved with the Rotaract project at its charter meeting.

Because of Adopt-A-Grandparent's recent expansion, the Brandell Volunteer Center is now accepting applications for more student-mentors!
Adopt-A-Grandparent (AAG) is a co-mentoring program that seeks to foster positive, meaningful relationships between CMU students and residents at Maplewood Assisted Living of Mount Pleasant. The program matches students with a senior based on similar interests and each pair spends at least one hour per week together visiting, playing games, and learning from each other. Participants also attend monthly special events together and take part in activities like bingo, arts and crafts, and movie nights.

01-19-2012: 15th Annual Leadership Summit @ GVSU
Dear CMU Students,
I hope that this message finds you in good, warm spirits. I am writing to remind you of your invitation to our 15th annual Leadership Summit, at Grand Valley State University! Leadership Summit will be held on February, 18th, 2012. This year we have a nationally recognized keynote speaker, Judson Laipple, an Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society sponsored case study competition, and over 30 breakout sessions to choose from.
We also are very excited and proud of our 5th annual ODK case study competition. The purpose of the Case Study Competition is to provide an advanced educational learning experience for student leaders attending Leadership Summit. Up to eight teams of two students will have one hour to review a scenario related to student leadership and twenty minutes to both present their leadership strategies and answer questions from the judges. Please have your students indicate on their registration if they would like to participate in the ODK case study competition.
At Leadership Summit we will not only be offering invaluable leadership skills, but will also be providing dinner, conference gift, and a raffle with wonderful prizes all for only $25 dollars! We look forward to meeting you at Leadership Summit! Registration is open until Friday, February 3rd!

01-18-2012: WANTED: LEADERSHIP CAMP FACILITATORS!
The Office of Residence Life would like your student leaders to consider applying
for facilitator positions with Leadership Camp 2012! Facilitators have a variety of backgrounds including residence life experience, Marching Chips, Student Government Association, the Volunteer Center, and Greek organizations. We hope that we continue the diverse selection this year.
Leadership Camp Facilitators lead our new students through a multitude of
leadership development activities during a 3 day experience on campus. Facilitators support our belief that so much of what a student learns is outside of the classroom. In the case of Leadership Camp, this learning begins even before participants attend their first classes. We know that this program has a very strong impact on the students who attend and the students who work as facilitators as many describe this experience as life-changing and worth every minute.
Leadership Camp will be taking place May 13-15th and May 18-20th. Each camp
session is anticipated to serve 150 new first year student leaders.
While Leadership Camp is a program for aspiring leaders under the umbrella of
the Leadership Institute, it also serves as an advanced leadership development
opportunity for those who serve as facilitators.
If any of your students would like to join us in committing to this exciting
program, please encourage them to complete the attached application and
return it by 5pm, February 3rd to the attention of Kim Voisin at the Office of
Residence Life, Ronan 270 or the Kesseler Success Center in the Towers.

Be A Good Neighbor:
Mount Pleasant and CMU are friendly places! It is not uncommon to say hello to people as you pass them on the side walk. ␣ As a courtesy, let your neighbors know you are having a party. ␣ Remember, noise travels far. Avoid pointing speakers outside or playing music too loudly inside.
Large crowds tend to create a lot of noise as well and in the residence halls, even just a few extra
people in your room can cause a lot of noise. ␣ Be sure that you are not blocking sidewalks or roadways. ␣ Pick up any trash on your lawn immediately following the party. Nobody likes trash.
The sooner you pick it up, the better. You’ll make your neighbors happy and you’ll avoid a possible
trash/debris ticket. ␣ If your neighbor or roommate approaches you with concerns about your party, listen to them
calmly and accommodate their wishes.
Be A Good Host:
␣ Understand the party host is responsible and liable for anything that happens as a result of the party. It is in your best interest to keep your guests safe and out of trouble. In the residence halls, you will be held responsible for your guests’ behavior.
␣ Don’t let anyone under the age of 21 drink at your party. ␣ Make sure everyone has a way to get home safe. ␣ Identify one or two people to act as “monitors.” They should stay sober, monitor noise levels,
help guests get home safely, and calmly interact with the police and neighbors. ␣ Know all of the people attending your party. This is the best way to avoid thefts, fights and
other negative situations.

There is one week left to register for the 2011 Homecoming Maroon Cup & Golden Goblet Competitions!! RSOs will spend the week competing in various events and the RSO that accumulates the most points (competition & spirit) will win the Maroon Cup (larger RSOs) or the Golden Goblet (smaller RSOs). Two RSOs can combine and compete in either division. Also NEW this year, the 1st place teams in both divisions will get $75 in free pizza, 2nd place will get $50 in free pizza and 3rd place will get $25 in free pizza. Join Multicultural Academic Student Services for the Hispanic Heritage Month Food Taster and Capoeira Demonstration on Wednesday, September 28 from 5-7 pm in the UC Rotunda. Taste delicious dishes from Latin American countries like Brazil, Cuba, and Mexico! To round out the evening, check out TABCAT for a demonstration of the Brazilian martial art and dance form called capoeira. Cost is $3 for students, $5 for community members.

09-21-2011: 2011 Homecoming Parade
Attention Students:
Homecoming 2011, "I Dream a Dream", is the week of October 9th -15th! As many of you know, Registered Student Organizations can sign up to participate in either the Maroon Cup or the Golden Goblet competition. Sign ups are taking place on OrgSync beginning September 19th!
In addition to the week long competitions, RSO's can participate in the Homecoming Parade on Saturday, October, 15th and earn last chance points for the Maroon Cup. If your RSO is not participating in the Maroon Cup challenge, you can still participate in the parade! The deadline for parade sign up is Friday, September 30th at 5pm, so register on OrgSync under the Forms tab today! For the parade rules and guidelines, please read the Parade Packet found on OrgSync under the Files tab in the Homecoming Documents folder.

Mr. Olmos is a dedicated activist and diversity speaker who guides his audience through the inspiring story of how he survived the barrio and succeeded on his own terms by making his own choices. Emphasizing the need for all races to work together, he explains how diversity in our society works to everyone's advantage. This event is free and open to the public.

09-15-2011: COME WORK FOR CAMPUSPEAK!
Student leader, excellent communication skills and an attention to detail that makes unorganized people shudder -- if this sounds like you -- come work for CAMPUSPEAK!
As of now, CAMPUSPEAK is offering just one half-year internship. The next internship period will be January - June 2012. This position is ideal for those with professional ambitions in Higher Education, public relations, event management, small business/entrepreneurship, business, logistics, association management and more.
The internship takes place in Aurora, CO -- just outside of Denver. Our internships is paid and comes with the use of a furnished townhouse located one mile from our office. We will cooperate with any intern taking online courses or using this internship to fulfill academic requirements. Past interns have also had second jobs in the evenings to supplement their income, and that's totally cool with us.
We look for candidates with a proven student leadership history who have great communication skills. You have to be a self-starter, be able to manage multiple tasks and dive into projects without a ton of management and guidance. If you are friendly, outgoing, a problem-solver and a self-starter, this could be a great experience for you.
OPEN INTERNSHIP POSITION:
EVENTS INTERN
This intern will fill two specific roles. First, they will work with our Interactive Workshops Director to set up and manage all of the campus appearances by our 60 member Facilitator Team. IW (Interactive Workshops) bookings tend to be complex and thus require an intern who can successfully manage lists of details with great accuracy. We will be launching new workshops during your internship, so you'll have a chance to help create and promote a new product. You will work directly with our customers at campuses across the country, helping them plan for successful workshop events, so it's a great experience for someone interested in event planning, running a small business, project management and marketing. The second role will be assisting the company's CEO with the planning and implementation of the company's bi-annual meeting which is taking place in Las Vegas, June 6-9, 2012. If you've ever thought it would be fun to plan a conference, this will put you to the test. Upon successful completion of tasks related to this large event/project, the intern will be invited to join the company's staff, speakers and facilitators for five days in Las Vegas, putting on the meeting (all expenses paid).

The Student Budget Allocation Committee (SBAC) will be holding informational sessions on the dates below. SBAC provides funding to student organizations to assist them in their effort to bring program/events to campus or attend conferences.
